ughie Mack, de son vrai
nom Hugh McGowan, est né le 26
novembre 1884 à Brooklyn, New York. Il exerce plusieurs métiers dont celui
d’entrepreneur des pompes funèbres. Ses locaux étaient proches de ceux de la Vitagraph
Company of America située : 15ème rue à Brooklyn, dans le quartier de Flatbush.
Nous sommes en 1912 et Hugh décide de se joindre à la file d’attente
qui, chaque jour, se forme devant l’entrée des studios de cette importante
firme cinématographique. Il a comme espoir: celui de faire carrière dans le
cinéma.

rand de taille, malgré sa très forte corpulence, il est
engagé. Il devient le faire-valoir d’un comique‘‘gras’’, comme lui, du nom de John
Bunny avec qui il apparaît dans: ‘‘A Millinery Bomb’’ (juillet1913),
et dans d'autres films tournés la même année avec cette vedette. Plus tard, Hughie
Mack tournera un petit nombre de comédies avec pour partenaire George
Bunny, le frère de John.
Son contrat lui permet de tourner pour Imperial Motion
Picture en 1912 et pour Edison en 1913 et 1914.
À cette période des premiers temps du cinéma, c’était un
privilège, pour un comédien, de voir son nom mentionné au générique d’un film. John
Bunny, soucieux de conserver sa notoriété et de préserver sa position de
star, arrivera à ses fins en obtenant auprès du directeur de la Vitagraph,
Mr. Albert E. Smith, que le nom de Hughie Mack, ce nouvel
arrivant talentueux, ne soit pas révélé au public. Cette
injuste mesure prendra vraiment fin au décès de Bunny. Durant la période de 1913 à 1915, le
tempérament comique de Hughie va le conduire au vedettariat. À la mort
prématurée de John Bunny, survenue le 26 avril 1915, Hughie Mack,
surnommé ‘‘Bouboule’’ dans l’Hexagone et Fatty aux USA, sera la
nouvelle star et le comique numéro un de la Vitagraph.

vant 1916, il aura tourné dans sa propre série baptisée: Hughie
Mack Comedies, courts métrages dont l’écriture des scénarii et la direction
étaient de Lawrence Semon, alias Larry Semon, futur illustre comique du slapstick américain.
Malgré une politique de destruction
systématique des films, après leur exploitation, instaurée par les responsables
de la Vitagraph, il subsiste encore quelques-unes de ces copies
parmi la quarantaine des petits films produits avec Hughie Mack. Les titres les plus connus sont: Tubby Turns The Tables, Losing
Weight, A Jealous Guy, His Conscious Conscience, Walls and
Wallops, Jumps and Jealousy (datés de1916), Rips and Rushes, Masks and Mishaps,
Pests and Promises, Bombs and Blunders, Hazards and Home Runs
and Gall and Gasoline (datés de 1917).

n août 1917, Hughie Mack quitte définitivement la Vitagraph
pour la L-KO qui lui offre un
contrat plus juteux. En 1919, il travaille, durant une courte période pour Mack
Sennett, qui alors faisait distribuer ses comédies par la Paramount.
Avant le début des années 1920, Hughie Mack a aussi travaillé pour Universal
Studios. Il tournera des longs métrages, quelques courts métrages pour
différentes firmes et dans deux séries pour Universal, jusqu’en 1927. La filmographie de Hughie
Mack nous donne un aperçu de toutes les périodes évoquées ci-dessus.
Hugh McGowan décède le 13
octobre 1927, d’une crise cardiaque, à son appartement de Santa Monica,
Californie. Cette mort subite ne lui fera pas connaître l’anxiété, qui va miner
la plupart des acteurs, lors du passage du muet au parlant.

l’acteur Frank Hayes.
Ce long métrage représentait, à son achèvement,
42 bobines, il fut réduit à 24 bobines par Erich Von Stroheim lui-même, Rex
Ingram le réduit à son tour à 18 bobines, puis June
Mathis
à 10 bobines, qui sera la version définitive de ce chef-d’œuvre du cinéma. Ces
modifications successives sembleraient être les principales causes de la sortie
tardive de ‘‘Greed’’.
